This is a unanimous consensus statement from the Global Omega-3 Summit on Nutrition, Health and Human Behaviour – Bruges, Belgium 2011. Pretty serious stuff, hey? Stuart Tomc, CNHP, Global Educator for Nordic Naturals, has added;
“Failing to correct the omega-3 deficiency jeopardises our future and that of our children as well”.
But, as one of our Facebook friends pointed out, the most amazing part about this finding is it’s completely preventable for most people. So it’s not all doom and gloom!
So how do I know if I’m deficient?
If you do not eat a lot of fish (at least 2 serves per week), or take a high-quality omega-3 supplement, then you are probably deficient. What’s more, if your intake of omega-6 is high (think corn oil, olive oil, and margarine), those foods could be sabotaging your omega-3 levels.
So what can I do?
Limit your omega-6 intake and increase your omega-3 intake. Remember: “Nix the 6 and eat the 3s” You can even get a blood test to find out your risk factor based on your omega-3 and omega-6 levels in blood.
