I’ve recently found out that I’m pregnant and have been looking into pregnancy health care. I’ve got the usual prescriptions from the doctor, but would prefer to be taking natural supplements through the duration of my pregnancy. A lot of my mummy friends have taken Elivit, purely from seeing the ads for it. Is there anything natural that you can recommend during and post pregnancy?
Congratulations! As well as taking a good quality multi vitamin designed for this special time in your life, it is also important to take a good quality fish oil supplement high in omega-3’s (and in particular high in DHA).
DHA is an important ingredient for baby’s brain, eye, nervous system and immune system development. As well as supporting your growing baby, DHA also helps you with those ‘pregnancy brain’ symptoms and may support mood especially after birth when Mum’s are prone to post natal depression.
It is recommended that you take a good quality brand free from contaminants (such as heavy metals and other chemicals), it is also for this reason it is recommended you take your omega-3’s supplementally rather than consuming fish in your diet during pregnancy. DHA is recommended in all stages of pregnancy and breast feeding (it passes through the milk to baby) and in fact it could take you 2 years of supplementing after you finish breast feeding to replenish the DHA you have lost to your baby! Once you stop breast feeding I suggest you mix a fish oil specifically for babies into their bottle to give ongoing support to their rapid brain development.
